Can you tell us about your work, when did you start creating?
I have always been creative! From the minute I could pick up a crayon I was drawing and painting and being creative as much as I could. My first drawing was Mr blobby haha!! I was always interested in painting and applied to art college (Duncan of Jordanstone in Dundee) with a full painting and expressive portfolio. I ended up studying Fine Art which is drawing, painting, sculpture, woodwork, metalwork and printmaking. I did huge and detailed black and white illustrations with pops of colour and loved them.
However, I started to feel my work was “formulaic” and I wasn’t excited by what I was creating anymore. I started exploring painting again which had always been my first love! Then when I found out I was pregnant I was just so filled with ideas, enthusiasm, and I painted non stop! I couldn’t sit still because I had so many ideas and my style developed into the colourful bonanza it is today!
How would you describe your home decor style?
My home decor style at the moment is actually very understated and neutral. This is not me AT ALL but we are in the process of selling our house so I had to reign in the multicoloured cushions and throws and paint things more “calming” shades of greens and whites! The house we live in now was out first buy and a foot on the ladder. It needed a lot of work and we completed most of it and it looks good to sell now, which was always our aim.
However, my personal style is so very different! I think more is more! No grey rooms for me, I WILL HAVE COLOUR and I would like it everywhere! Im a big art collector – nothing too posh, but just pieces I LOVE – and I have multipole gallery walls in my house. I have a wish mash of furniture from Victorian nests of tables to modern spin sofas and IKEA dressers because storage is a necessity. I am itching to get my hands on a new home which we can really put our stamp on!
What inspires you when you get in a rut?
When I get in a rut I have to leave my studio for a few days. I go and do different things that make me happy. I go for walks in the countryside with my dog and baby, cook a new dish from that recipe book that I think looks delish, have a glass of wine in the evening and watch a new movie or an old fave. Have a bath with the window open so I get the fresh air on my skin, read something with m ore substance than a magazine, explore Pinterest. I think the key thing with a rut is to know that it usually comes from routine and following the same steps day after day. So in those moments I actively choose to set a new path and this usually kicks me out of the rut I’m on!
What colors do you enjoy using in your art the most and why?
Oh I love every colour!!! All of them and all at once!! But I have a special place in my heart for blue. There are so many variations on it and none are ugly! Its my go to! Oh and yellow – its the colour of sunshine!
Where do you create most of your work, what is your space like?
I create most of my work in my studio which is actually our dining room which I converted (stole) and filled with art! Its quite a small room and has a huge dresser which I painted one day and I love sitting my finished pieces on it! I like to sit on the floor to paint or stand, so very rarely use an easel. The floor is absolutely covered in paint and I have stacks of work all around the room as I paint
Name 3 crafters, artists or designers that you follow and love their work…
– @ByVicki Photography. Her photos are the most glorious rainbow pics and we are working together in April 2019!
– @Erin Summer. Her creative ideas are always so unique and funny!
– @Phoebeganderart. Her resin pieces are like little snaps of the ocean!
What are your favorite items decorating your home and why?
Im a big fan of blankets and candles! Candles are so lovely to add a wee bit of ambience and light to a space, and not to expensive! Blankets I love because I’m always cold and they are cosy! But more than that they are so versatile! Add pone to your sofa as a throw and it protects your furniture, but changes the style of a simple room in moments. I love my red tartan throws on my sofa which are so cosy in winter and protect the sofa itself from toddler destruction!
